Fairness for International Students

International graduate students are frequently undermined and underserved by University Administration. In addition to Mandatory Student Fees, international students were required to pay an extra $714 a year in International Student Fees. The Office of International Services likewise remains largely unresponsive to the needs and concerns of international students.

We need a union to ensure that international graduate students are a priority for the University and are being treated with fairness and dignity.

International Student Fees

Indiana University international students paid the second highest fees in the Big Ten in 2020/2021. First and foremost, the international student fee needed to be removed for international graduate students. Our historic Spring 2022 Strike ended the mandatory domestic fees and the international student fee.

Several Big Ten Universities have negotiated to reduce or eliminate fees. We can do this at Indiana as well. Other Big Ten universities charge no international student fee whatsoever.

Fairness in Opportunities for Research and Teaching

Ensure that work and academic opportunities are distributed fairly and enforced through the grievance procedure.

Office of International Services

Make the Office of International Services more responsive to international students. One proposal has been to create a committee of international students elected by international students (not appointed by administrators) to provide feedback and input on OIS services, increasing the effectiveness of the OIS.

IU Legal Resources

Provide additional legal resources to IU international students, especially when faced with visa applications or problems that arise from their legal status as international students.

International students deserve fairness and protection from IU.
